GILGIT, Feb 25: The leaders of the Northern Areas
Tanzeem Ahle Sunnah Wal Jama’t have given a wheel jam
and pen-down strike call on Wednesday (today) in
Gilgit what they called “to protest against the
alleged hurling of stones at their mosque by some
unknown persons on Monday”.
They also observed a complete shutter down in Gilgit
on Tuesday to lodge their protest over the above issue
due to which business activities remained suspended
for consecutive three days in Gilgit.
Police sources said that they had so far lodged 17
FIRs against various persons allegedly involved in
arson cases on Monday. They said that they had not
been able to arrest any of them but added that in the
due course of time they would arrest the accused who
were reportedly belonged to both the sects of major
Shia and Sunni.
TASWJ sources said that if the alleged accused were
not arrested, they would observe complete strikes in
the following days.
On the other side central Khateeb of Imamia Masjid
Gilgit Agha Ziauddin Rizvi announced three-day mourn
to express solidarity with the families of the victims
of the Karachi killings.
Mr Rizvi also disowned all those persons who were
allegedly involved in damaging private and public
property or those resorted to arson on Monday protest
processions.
He said that he asked all the participants to protest
peacefully but some elements had deliberately resorted
to violence to promote their personal agenda.
The Northern Areas president of PPP Syed Jafar Shah
who is also member of the Northern Areas Legislative
Council when contacted condemned the reported violent
actions from both the sides and termed it an attempt
to spoil the peace and tranquility of the region. The
official sources said that a high-level meeting headed
by Northern Areas home secretary Saeed Ahmed Khan is
in progress to deal with the situation in Gilgit.
KKH opened for traffic
GILGIT: The workers of Frontier Works Organization
(FWO) opened the Karakoram Highway (KKH) on Tuesday
after ten-day long closure, the FWO sources said.
They added that the highway was opened for light
traffic on the morning of Tuesday which later cleared
for heavy traffic as well.
They added that work on Gilgit-Astore and
Gilgit-Skardu and Gilgit-Chitral roads is still going
on and till filing of this story (5.15pst) these roads
were yet to open. Due to blockade of these roads,
there is shortage of fuel and food stuff in all parts
of the Northern Areas
