Godhra forensic report raises questions


The investigation into the Godhra train fire has revealed that at least 60 litres of petrol was used to torch passenger car S-6 of the Sabarmati Express and, since it was completely charred from the inside, it was clear that the intensity of the fire was more inside than outside.

The police is now investigating whether so much petrol was already there inside the bogey in separate cans or did the attackers board the train with the cans when the train halted at Godhra railway station.

Additional DGP (crime) A.K. Bhargava says the police is trying to ascertain whether the petrol sample from the bogey matches petrol samples from nearby petrol pumps and garages. Investigating officials are yet to find out the exact source of the petrol used in the incident though an initial investigation did prove that it was not stolen or procured from the closest petrol pump or garages in advance.

Forensic science laboratory officials are yet to submit their final report but their preliminary report stresses that the intensity of the fire was maximum inside. They, however, refuse to imply that the bogey was set ablaze from inside. "This is the police’s job ... to find out," FSL sources said.

Mr. Bhargava said officials feel at this stage that, as per the reconstruction of the crime scene, 60 litres of petrol could be carried and poured into the bogey by at least three persons using 20-litre cans. He, however, added that this was still under investigation.

Surprisingly, the police still does not have a single eyewitness mentioned in the chargesheet who has testified that the petrol was poured in the compartment of the aisle adjoining berth number 72 in bogey number S-6.

The report tabled on the Sabarmati Express investigations by the Forensic Science Laboratory has triggered off a chain reaction of queries, controversies and speculation but senior FSL officials said that the report is not final and it mentions that the fire burnt 58 persons was from inside, not clarifying if the S-6 bogey was set on fire from inside.

A senior FSL official said on condition of anonymity that all that the report can confirm for now is that at least 60 litres of petrol was used to set ablaze coach S-6 and that it has been burnt the maximum from inside, which indicates that the intensity of the fire was maximum inside.

The official said, "It is the job of the FSL to find scientific evidence to corroborate investigation regarding the crime scene. The rest is up to investigation officials. The report we have submitted need not be final and the police can approach us for more scientific details if they wish. The report does not imply who set the coach on fire and from where exactly."

Survivors of coach S-7 claim there is no way the attackers could have got inside and poured petrol to set it ablaze from the inside.

Ms. Urmila Trivedi, a survivor of the Sabarmati Express carnage who was in the adjoining coach S-7 said, "There is no way anybody could have entered any of the coaches from outside once the train had stopped since heavy stone-pelting was going on. About 118 passengers, mostly Ramsevaks, were in S-6 and when the disturbance went out of hand and mobs started throwing petrol bombs and burning cloth rags into the coach. People had locked all the doors and thronged the doors trying to escape. Moreover, as soon as this happened we closed all the windows, doors and even the shutter that connects two bogeys
