The seminar on 'The Supreme Court Verdictand the security of
women' was inagurated on saturday by Justice D Sridevi, at
Achutha Menon Hall. The event, which was held in the aftermath
of the recent SC verdict on the arrest of women was organised
by the All India Mahila Samskarika Sanghatana (AIMSS).

Though the precedences so far existed with regard to the arrest of
women were largely in favour of the security of the fairer sex,
the SC verdict will definitely have a negative impact on them,
Justice Sridevi felt. "Chances are high that women and other weaker
sections will now be denied justice,". The verdict also assumes
significance in the present context in which a good number of women
are involved in various criminal cases, she added.

While putting forward certain amenmends on the relevant sections of the Cr
PC, Justice Sridevi stressed the need for the presence of women police
personnel while women are being arrested. No women should be arrested
at night hours. Women and children below age of fifteen should be interrogated
at their own residence, if necessary. Similarly, social welfare organisations
should be informed of the arrest of women, if any, Justice Sridevi suggested.

Sowbhagya Kumari, who presided over the function, stressed the need to implement
the NHSRC directives related to the arrest of women. P.S Sheela, Shyla K John,
V Venugopal, Mini K Philip, Mymoon, Jothy Narayanan, BK Rajagopal and jayasree
Sukumaran participated in the seminar.
