A state of emergency has been declared in the Himalayan Kingdom and the whole nation is cut off from telecommunications, internet access, and no media is allowed to make news bulletins except government owned ones. It is clear that he is determined to be an autocrat crossing all limits and constitutional borders.
The senior political party leaders have been placed under house arrest and the streets in the major towns and cities are filled with Royal Nepali Soldiers (RNA here after) with tanks. A ban has been put on political parties.
The king, addressing the nation through state run television, made it clear that he will hold the ultimate of power of the nation for the next three years. However, he has had the ultimate power with him when he first sacked the elected prime minister Sher Bhadur Deuba 2 years ago.
Nepal a small country sandwiched between two giant nations, India and China, has enough internal problems to solve; this present step taken by the king can only worsen the situation.
As a constitutional monarch he shouldn't have taken further unconstitutional steps which makes him unpopular in this land and abroad as well. It is unlikely he will be supported by neighbouring countries. The Indian Prime Minister has already stated that India won't take part in the SAARC SUMMIT, scheduled to be held in Bangladesh, because up the political upheaval in Nepal.
The crave for power has made the general people's life very insecure and miserable. The frequently announced Nepal Bandha (strike) and anti human right activities has become common practices. Ii is always the innocent people who suffer in such period of political crisis. School children and teachers have been abducted from schools and many schools in the Western part of Nepal have been turned into army barracks which have been used both by the RNA and the Maoist militia.
Many youths have left their villages in fear of being abducted by the rebels and have found their way in countries like India, Qatar, Malaysia, and Saudi Arabia as labourers.
Nepal once used to be recognised as a peace zone in the world, it now has witnessed bloodshed. Since the Maoists started so called war 9 years ago, over 12 thousand people have lost their lives already.
It is a pity to see the only Hindu and Himalayan Kingdom in the world in such a situation where Buddha, the fountain of world peace, was born 2500 years ago.
