BHUBANESHWAR, India (AP) -- A mob attacked the
office of an American electric supply company in eastern India on
Saturday, throwing rocks at windows and breaking down doors to protest
irregular power supplies.

No one was injured when 100 protesters attacked the
office of the Central Electric Supply Company, a subsidiary of the
U.S.-based energy company, AES Corp., police said. At least 17 people were
arrested.

''Police reached the spot and prevented the mob from
entering the office and ransacking it,'' said Arun Sarangi,
Superintendent of Police.

Saturday's attack in Bhubaneshwar, the capital of
Orissa state, was the second on a CESCO office in a week that has seen
daytime temperatures hovering at around 110 degrees.

A crowd of about 2,000 demonstrators burned down an
office of the power distribution company at Banki, 40 miles north
of Bhubaneshwar, on Wednesday while protesting repeated power outages in
the area.

''Tempers are running high and the frequent power
failures make people feel helpless,'' said Aparti Pradhan, a shopkeeper.

Electricity supply to Banki and adjoining areas had
been affected following a mechanical snag at Khurda, 20 miles south of
Bhubaneshwar.

Orissa was the first Indian state to privatize the
management of electricity distribution as part of a World Bank-sponsored
program of power sector reforms.
