General strike tomorrow

CHENNAI, NOV. 21 With no end in sight to the transport strike, some of the major trade unions have confirmed their plan to go on a general strike on Friday. The action committee of the transport trade unions today announced that it would be a 24-hour strike from the morning of November 23.

A meeting of various trade unions of banks, insurance and Central and State Government employees, public sector units and college teachers today extended ``total support'' to the strike call. According to Mr. C.H. Venkatachalam, convener, it was decided to hold a dharna in front of the LIC building in Chennai and hold a mass demonstration in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, the Director-General of Police, Mr. B.P. Nailwal, said all arrangements were being made to maintain law and order.

The Government warned that it would detain under the National Security Act anyone indulging in violence or preventing employees from going to work.
