TN: Left parties threaten stir against fare hikes
Chennai, Nov. 30 (PTI): The CPI and CPI (M) in Tamil Nadu today said they would announce a series of agitations, including a day's bandh, if the State Government did not withdraw the financial sector reforms announced on Wednesday.
In a joint statement, the Tamil Nadu unit secretaries of the parties N Sankaraiah and R Nallakannu said the State had launched a ``massive attack'' on the people who voted the AIADMK to power and the hikes announced in bus fares, PDS rice price and power tariff had ``shocked the people''.
They said the hikes were harsh and the State Legislature was not taken into confidence before the measures were announced. They described the moves as ``undemocratic''.
The AIADMK Government, they said, had decided to implement the economic policies of the Centre in the State.
The parties, in consultation with other `democratic and secular' parties, would agitate against the hikes, they added.
