TEXAS HAS A FULL ONE PERCENT OF ALL ITS POPULATION INCARCERATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Governor George W. Bush's Freedom legacy? Amazingly, Texas also has a full 5 percent of its adult population under correctional supervision - jail, prison, probation, or parole. TEXAS INFO is at the end of the enclosed TIMELINE CHART for the QUINTUPLING of the U.S. INCARCERATION RATE since right-wing President Nixon declared a War on Drugs in 1971. Note that no state in the USA has a rate less than 200.
Louisiana (1025) and TEXAS (1014)
have the highest rates in 1999. They have a full
1% OF THEIR POPULATIONS
INCARCERATED. 1 in every 136
residents in the United States and its Territories was
incarcerated at yearend 2000. Nationwide, it costs well
over $20,000 average per year for each inmate.

inmates per 100,000 women in the U.S., compared
to 1,297 per 100,000 men."

The U.S. drug-war inmate MAJORITY is calculated by adding together prisoners who have committed drug crimes, drug-related crimes (such as robbing to get money for drugs that are expensive because of the drug war), drug trade crimes, drug-related parole violations, etc.. The USA has 5% of the world's population and 25% of the world's 8 MILLION prisoners. As of the year 2000 the USA again has the world's highest incarceration rate! It is 5 to 17 times higher than all other Western (long democratic traditions) nations. The US rate is almost 4 times higher than in 1980 at the time of Reagan's election. 6.5 million adults, or 1 in 32 adults in the USA, or 3.1% of adults, were under correctional supervision (in jail, in prison, on probation, or on parole) at yearend 2000.
