| | Amnesty International's Human Rights Mela for India
Amnesty International launches its first human rights mela, online for India.
On December 13, 2001, a suicide squad attacked the Indian Parliament, killing 7 security guards before killing themselves. Not only was this heinous attack on the Indian Parliament an attack on the world's largest democracy, it was also an attack on the institution that was debating the future direction of civil liberties in India. The institution which was debating the fate of POTO, the Pevention of Terrorism Ordinance. As part of the ongoing debate over the POTO and the continuing human rights violations inflicted upon human rights defenders in the country, Amnesty International USA will be holding its first ever human rights mela for India. This mela will bring together human rights activists from India and the US in a week long discussion about the human rights situation in India in the context of the current political situation and what steps can be taken in order to maintain the slow and steady progress towards full justice and empowerment for those most affected by human rights violations. The events commence on January 7 and culminate on January 17, with a web chat. Please sign up at
