Some villagers of the Bharawan Block of Hardoi Dist. which falls in Beniganj Assembly constituency have decided to boycott the Vidhan Sabha polls on 18th February. Local organization Asha Parivar has put up posters in the area raising some people’s related issues like non-implementation of minimum wages, corruption in Police Station, Primary Health Care Centre, Tehsil, bribes taken by Pradhans and other officials when doing people’s work, collection of undue irrigation revenue, held up construction of Roads and electricity not having reached many villages. On 12th February all the candidates were invited to participate in a dialogue with the people at the center of the organization called Asha Ashram in Lalpur village. Whereas the sitting MLA of Samajwadi Party Ram Pal Verma did not have time to listen to the people, the BJP candidate Varsha Gautam did not show up. The Congress candidate Vimla Verma listened to the people’s complaint patiently but went away without promising anything concrete. The local pradhan Ghanshyam who was representing the Bahujan Samaj Party candidate Satyanarayana admitted candidly that a huge sum of money was paid to obtain the BSP ticket and hinted indirectly that the money being spent during campaigning will have to be recovered later through corruption. The people representing 7-8 villages were quite disappointed with the attitude of the candidates. Hence some villagers of Lalpur, Banjra, Mathura Kheda, Pitauli, Muraua Kheda, Natpurwa, Ghatmapur have decided to boycott the polls to the UP assembly. On the polling day, i.e., 18th February, 2002, they will stage a sit-in at the Bharawan Chauraha during the period the votes are being cast by wrapping a white cloth around their mouth and holding placards mentioning their demands.
