General strike total, peaceful

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MARCH 5. Near-empty roads, closed markets and streetlights that failed to turn on as darkness set in summed up the tale of the 24-hour general strike called by pro-LDF and pro-BJP trade unions beginning last night in support of the 28-day-old indefinite strike by State employees and teachers.

The strike was as total as it could possibly get and by and large peaceful. The State Government had declared a holiday today to avert untoward incidents in connection with the strike. In many places, the authorities had issued prohibitory orders and the police had rounded up 1,580 persons to prevent any outbreak of violence.

Unlike on similar occasions in the recent past, even two-wheelers mostly kept off the roads of the State capital today. With the employees of the KSRTC striking work, buses did not ply. Private buses, taxi cars and autorickshaws also stayed off the road.

Employees of all nationalised and public sector banks, insurance industry, major public sector units in Central and State sectors and the KSEB also joined the strike. The CBSE examinations slated for today were held as scheduled.

Incidents of stone-throwing were reported from some places such as Kollam, Ernakulam, Palakkad and Kozhikode.

The CITU State president, Mr. K.N. Ravindranath, hailed the strike as a major success and hoped that the Government would at least now see reason and take steps to settle the employees' strike.
