37: What will happen to the circle of life
The growth of our human population has been exponential. If you tell someone a secret and the secret gets passed along to people one at a time, then knowledge of the secret grows steadily. However, if you tell many people a secret who also tell numerous other people, then knowledge of the secret grows exponentially. How fast will the message spread exponentially?
By understanding what exponential growth is, we can understand that our human population is growing very fast. A rapid population growth is a significant factor in any type of situation. For example, an enormous amount of water can be found on Earth. Most of it is salt water while a small percentage exists as fresh water. Fresh water is crucial to life on Earth.
When the human population was relatively small, fresh water was available in ample amounts. As our human population grew, we needed more fresh water. We used our intelligence to find and tap many sources. The amount of water on Earth didn't necessarily increase or decrease; we just found new ways to harvest more of Earth's fresh water supply.
Fresh water will not disappear from the circle of life, but access to fresh water will be restricted according to its availability. Is the human population the only species dependent upon fresh water for survival? If other species are increasingly disappearing from existence, what will happen to the circle of life? If the circle of life is weakened, what will happen to the human species?
