| CNDP CRIES HALT TO PRO-WAR CAMPAIGN By madurai 23/05/2002 At 05:37 The Coalition for Nuclear Disarmament and Peace (CNDP) is deeply concerned at the campaign unleashed in India for a 'full-scale war' with Pakistan and the attempts at projecting a 'national consensus' in favour of such a war. Resort to such a war to settle disputes between two nuclear-weapons states is a far from readily acceptable option. It is all the more so in view of the nuclear-weapon capability acquired by both India and Pakistan in the last four years and the fact that neither has ruled out the use of nuclear weapons against the other. The acquisition of nuclear weapons by them has only been followed by the deterioration of both internal and external security in both countries. The government of no nuclear-weapon state can be given a carte-blanche in this regard and authorised to take "any action" in the name of fighting terrorism. While condemning strongly the latest terrorist attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, the CNDP appeals to all political leaders, policy-makers and legislators of India and Pakistan to ensure immediate pull-back of troops from their common border and to launch a dialogue to resolve all outstanding issues. I am an Indian who believes in the kind of Indian-ness that has been nurtured by Gandhi, Nehru, Tagore and all the founding fathers. Hence, I feel, the words and actions of the present Indian government are an antithesis of all that is essentially and intrinsically "Indian". Of course, I am referring to the tacit support given by the Prime Minister to a man (or shall I say, a thing) like Narendra Modi and allowed innocent Indians to be killed by a violent mob. So on what basis is the government moralising to Pakistan about that country’s "support" to terrorists? Shouldn’t we set our house in order first before we start pointing fingers? I am aware that the attack on the soldiers’ family was cruel and deserving of punishment but are such attacks new in Kashmir? Don’t they happen all the time? Why is there such a war like hysteria NOW? And, again, I am not very confident that the BJP leadership at the helm of the government can be trusted with nuclear weapons. Aren’t they the ones who said, "Show us the place and we’ll show you what we can do" (or some such words) in the aftermath of the Pokhran blast? If Musharaf is a trigger-happy general, then, I think, so is Advani and company. Let us stop this war talk and get down to serious negotiations and discussions. War is the ultimate recourse and shouldn’t be toyed around as a bargaining chip. Nuclear weapons are not a joke. We don’t have nuclear shelters and neither do we have any deterrent capability and so on what basis are we flexing muscles? Vajpayee and Advani and Modi have shown us, in Gujarat, that they don’t care for the suffering of innocent Indians and would allow their wholesale massacre. And give some tepid explanation that lacks statesmanship and humaneness. So if this is the governments’ track record in conflict resolution, I shudder to think what will happen when war actually breaks out? Jai Hind
