Taking the complaint on file, the commission member, S. Sambandham, has ordered that a reply be sent by September 17.
A. Hasan Mohamed Jinnah and I. Paranthamen, jointly submitted that the students of the Government College, Melur, and the Meenakshi Women's College, Madurai, organised a demonstration on their institution premises on September 3.
Even as the agitating students of the Melur College and the police were holding a conversation, a laticharge was resorted to suddenly. Even after the main gate was closed, the police rushed inside and beat up the students and teaching staff.
The students of the Meenakshi College were also lathicharged.
The Assistant Commissioner, Hema, forcibly dragged one of the students, who was leading the agitation, to a police jeep. Several students were arrested and beaten up. The principals (cited among the respondents) failed to prevent the police from entering the institution premises.
The complainants sought action against the police officials concerned and also a suitable compensation to the injured.
The Director-General of Police and Mrs. Hema were among the other respondents cited in the petition.
