The campaign was sparked off following alleged complaints of oppression of Dalits by some upper caste persons in the village for the last so many years.
According to a signed statement issued by the District Secretary of the CPI(M)-led "Kula Vivaksha Porata Samithi'' (Organisation for struggle against caste discrimination), R. Ramana Rao, the Dalits in the village were being subjected to discriminatory practices such as serving of tiffin and water to them only in their hands and not on plates by the local eating houses, blocking their way to burial ground by unauthorisedly occupying even the approach roads, preventing them from entry into the temple of a folk god and allowing them to offer worship only from outside.
Reports reaching here said that with the activists belonging to the struggle committee and the district CPI(M) and CITU leaders launching a campaign today made the Dalits enjoy all the facilities which were denied to them all along in the village. Reports said that they were first taken to the two hotels and made its owners serve them tiffin on plates and water in glasses. The leaders also drew an assurance from the owners that it would not be a one-day affair but a permanent one. They then marched to the adjacent folk-god, "Gurrappa'' temple where they were allowed to cleanse the deity with their own hands and offer flowers and coconut, which all along remained a dream for them. What served as another morale-booster for the Dalits in their campaign today was the presence of the Srikalahasti (rural) Circle Inspector, Sivasankar Reddy, who while leaving the village held out a concealed threat to all the concerned that any reprisal against the Dalits after their departure would mean buying fresh trouble in the form of cases under the Prevention of Atrocities against the SC/ST Act.
