What a relief to realise that I am not the only one to be concerned about Kanchan Mishra's case! I have written to the PM, deputyPM, Modi,Jayalalitha,Rabri Devi,BJP offices in Delhi, Bal Tackery, Hema Malini, Shatrughan Sinha, Vinod Khanna,Arun Shourie,Star TV, Aaj Tak, Asian Age,Zee TV,Asian Age etc without receiving a single reply. Here is the copy of letter sent to PM:
I beg you to please read this letter in its entirety.
I am a UK resident and was recently in India and it was by chance that I came across a letter to Editor in the Outlook magazine (dated December 2, 2002) entitled ‘A Shotgun Wedding’. Through this letter I learnt that a gangster by the name of Sultan Mia has abducted a beautiful married Hindu woman called Kanchan Mishra together with her four-year-old son. The abduction took place in Patna in broad daylight. After this the lecherous Mia forcibly married her in a mosque, a lavish reception followed at a Mr Haq’s house (who is apparently a minister in Bihar). Sultan enjoys the patronage of the dreaded goonda MP Shahabuddin. Kanchan’s helpless husband has been trying to muster up help without any success. Even the police seem to be scared of the Muslim connection. It is a great shame that the media has largely ignored this tragedy and tried to hide this shameful incident by either remaining silent or giving it very little coverage and making it sound insignificant.
I just can not believe all this is happening in ‘secular’ India where the press, the so called intellectuals and opposition parties make deafening hue and cry even at mention of issues such as equal law (civil law) for every Indian citizen. I thought such incidents took place only during Mughal days. I have been trying desperately to do something for unfortunate Kanchan. None of the newspapers I sent letters to have responded, which is not surprising. Nearly a month after the incident Star TV gave coverage to this news very briefly and in a highly biased manner. Their main concern seemed to be that the incident might assume political colour. Unlike their other news items this news was not repeated throughout the day. On 23/12/02 the Asian Age reported this incident. Their coverage too was highly biased and they used words like ‘allegedly’ making the culprit sound innocent.
I have sent e-mails to VHP, BJP offices and several leaders but so far no response has been forthcoming.
Only the National Commission for Women seems to be bothered with the plight of Kanchan Mishra. They are demanding that Sultan Mia is arrested and a CBI inquiry is instituted. The Bihar police have refused to arrest him. In this case it is clear that if one waits for the law to take its course then it is going to be too late. Only God knows what mental and physical torture (including sexual harassment) she must have undergone. I understand her husband and relatives have been terrorised to the extent where the case will not stand any chance in the court – which is if the case ever reaches any courtroom. Time is of vital importance. In time even the victim herself is bound to resign her lot and accept her fate. The main question in my mind is ‘Can we let this monster go scot-free?’ If this criminal and his accomplices remain unpunished then what is there to stop them and others from exploiting the weaker and scared sections of the society even more? We simply must stand up and put a permanent halt to this sick mentality. It is this same mentality that led Salman Khan to treat Aishwarvya Rai like a rag doll and beat and harass her and her brother. The message this sad episode sends out is very disturbing. Such incidents are quite common and the culprits get away because their terror tactics work. Famous trails collapse when witnesses or the victim’s themselves turn hostile and retract from their own original allegations. Recently the trail of ‘respectable’ criminals collapsed when a person of high stature (Rakesh Roshan) turned hostile. Roshan’s earlier resolve to stand up against Mumbai’s underworld (which is controlled from Karachi and Dubai) must have waned due to fear for his family and lack of faith in the system. Terrorists and underworld are having a field day with the help of corrupt politicians and inefficient police. Besides using terror tactics top criminals use money to buy vital witnesses and high placed people. India’s biased media too helps them. It is worth wondering how many media and other influential persons operate under threats
It is futile to wait for the law to take its course in Kanchan’s case. In this case can we afford to wait for the law to act? Remember this incident has taken place in Lallo’s Bihar, which is suffering from jungle raj. We must liberate her and help her to normality at any cost and then let the law take its course. First and foremost liberate her. Great heroes like Shivaji did not wait for the law to take its course. They were forced to take up the sword to fight zulm. Had Shivaji or Guru Govind Singhji waited for justice to happen then India’s history would have been totally different. Are we going to wait for a new messiah? In the meantime let the famous Gandhian tolerance take the country to dogs? I am writing to you in the hope that you will not ignore this matter. Please do something right now! For my part I am willing to do anything that may be necessary to liberate her and teach the swine a lesson. How many more Kanchan’s are suffering in silence? It is not just Kanchan’s case – I am talking about the nightmare Mother India is going through.
The more I think of this incidence, the more disturbing it gets. Is this for real? Can someone really get away with such an appalling crime? Is this happening in this day and age? Is no one in India concerned about poor Kanchan’s fate? Can the present leaders of India not see that the present law system is simply not working? Can the leaders not sit down and come up with a home grown Indian system which will effectively tackle such cases? Surely you are not going to let the nightmare go on?
Kanchan’s case speaks volumes doesn’t it? It tells us how rotten and corrupt Indian police can get. How low the politicians have stooped. How fear prevents God fearing people to stand up against zulm. It shows how helpless the ordinary citizen of India really is. It throws light on the ugly faces of intellectuals who practise selective secularism. It reveals what interest Muslim and non-Muslim leaders earn for supplying votes from their vote banks. As far as the media is concerned words fail me…any ‘progress’ in such a society is going to be negated, isn’t it?
I have seen again and again that leaders in progressive countries always manage to plug in loop holes in the system that allow criminals to get away. After all law is man made – not God made.
The common man who makes up ‘overwhelming’ majority will support you – have no doubts on this one! Mother India is crying out for help.
Please don’t disregard my letter as just another emotional statement.
Please do revert back to me.
God Bless.
Yours sincerely
Ram Aggarwall
