Mr.Martin was convicted of murder, which was later on appeal, reduced to manslaughter. He is currentely serving a 5 year sentence in prison for this offence.
What makes his crime and his subsequent punishment so
different is the circumstances in which they were commited.
In August 1999, 2 burglars broke into Martins secluded farm
house. Martin heard the burglars break into his home, and
not knowing what threat they posed, he armed himself with
a hunting rifle that was kept in his farmhouse.
At the time, Martin wasn't sure what, who or how many
intruders there were in his house.
In the dark he managed to see the intruders and shot in their direction. 1 of the criminals was shot dead, the 2nd managed to escape, with bullet wounds to his leg.
Martin was later arrested and convicted of murder. It was held that it was 'unreasonable' force that he used.read more here
He was denied an early release this week by the parole board, because they felt he did not show sufficient remorse for shooting the burglar who broke into his house.
To me this is a disgrace. If someone broke into my house, I would defend my house with any means necessary, The core arguement here is should the criminals who break into your house, with the intent to commit crimes, be it rapes, thefts, arson, have any rights ? In the UK, it is believed they should have rights.
This is an absolute joke. If someone
came into my house to steal, or rape
my loved ones, if I saw them I would
probably kill them too. They have
no right to come into my house,
so they should know the risks. If
they get caught by the police, they
are likely to be sentenced to a
community penalty, of painting
an old peoples home, as thats the new
law in this country for burglars. Tony Martin is a hero, and he should be freed.
If you break into someones house, you should also know you are losing your rights as a human.
