Mr.Nawaz Khan Naji
Balwaristan : BNF Acting Chairman Shot at by Pakistan Police
PAKISTAN : A senior political leader and the acting chairman of the Balwaristan National Front (BNF) (Gilgit Baltistan) Mr.Nawaz Khan Naji was seriously injured when three local policemen fired on him while he was travelling in the Gakuch area of the Ghezer district in the northern areas.
Mr Naji was immediately removed to a local hospital by the people, where his condition is reported to be stable.
The assailants were identified as Constables of the local Gakuch police station. An FIR has been filed against these policemen and they have reportedly been arrested. Feelings are running high among the local people over the incident and the BNF and other nationalist parties are planning a protest against the incident.
He was born in Shheer, Poonyal, District Poonyal, Province Brooshaal, Balawaristan. He Passed His Matriculation Examination from Shheer and left for Karachi for College Studies. He passed his graduation from Karachi. He proposed a name Balawaristan instead of the so - called Pakistani colonial name the Northern Areas for the disputed region of Gilgit Baltistan. He also proposed nationalist party i.e. Balawaristan National Front (BNF) during his campaign of anti un - employment along with many other highly educated youth.
Abdul Hamid Khan, Mohammad Rafiq and Engineer Shujaat Ali accepted his proposal of new nationalist party and thus BNF was born on 30th July 1992 in Gilgit. We selected Nawaz Khan Naji as the first Chairman of BNF. Initially he wrote a manifesto for BNF, but his idea about the independence or within Pakistani constitution was not clear. Later Abdul Hamid Khan wrote the new manifesto, which was accepted by all the members of BNF including Nawaz Khan Naji.
The current manifest clearly seeks for independence of Balawaristan (Gilgit Baltistan, Chitral and Shhenaki Kohistan and Ladakh / Kargil). The inclusion of Chitral, Shhenaki Kohistan and Ladakh / Kargil in Balawaristan depends the voluntarily on will of their respective indigenous population. Nawaz Khan Naji is caretaker chairman in the absence of Abdul Hamid Khan, but Naji possess the title of founder member.
The anomalous position of the northern areas, which comprise the five districts of Skardu, Gilgit, Ghizer, Ghanche and Diamer, and are inhabited by diverse ethnic groups is at the root of the problem. The Dawn, on June 19, called for the area, in which two million people live, to be given ‘meaningful political representation’, regardless on the long-standing debate on whether it is part of the disputed Jammu and Kashmir region or part of Pakistan.
The northern areas are not part of any existing administrative unit of Pakistan and are governed directly by Islamabad, but have no representation in the National Assembly. The 28 member Northern Areas Legislative Assembly is ‘toothless’ with no real administrative or legislative powers.
The ambivalent position of the Federal Government on the status of the NA has deprived the area’s people of any sense of meaningful representation and given a sense of deep-rooted grievance among them.
