Social demonstrations observatory: The continent face the FTAA; mobilizations in Chile, Costa Rica, Peru and Argentina.
Chile The National Organization of Indigenous and Rural Women (AMURI) manifested their rejection about the opinion and declarations expressed by the government about the latest signature of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with United States. AMURI considerate that in the agreement, Chile becomes a servant for Washington interests. On a communicate, the organization pointed that “we declare that this agreement was redacted, negotiated and signed in a process in which only some sectors o the big companies were consulted and where the agreement’s contents remained in secret, even to the Parliament”. The group added, “For United States, this agreement hasn’t any economic importance, because Chile has no possibilities of becoming an important competence for the North American products. However, the agreement turns Chile into a United State’s politic allied for every international negotiation going on, specially the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the Free Trade American Area (FTAA). Besides, Amuri said that after that, it’s clear that Chile will be used to “block any Latin America’s unity possibility facing United States, to complicate the MERCOSUR negotiations and to force the different countries to accept the United State’s exigencies. Chile shamefully becomes the servant of the United State’s interest’s, scarifying, by the way, the welfare and the country’s future”. Costa Rica Three thousand people of 40 social organizations marched last Monday against the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Center America and United States. They departed from different places of San Jose and got together in the Legislative Assembly, where they reclaimed the parliament members not to sign the FTA and the agreement about the International Academy for the Law Compliment) creation.
