Insaaniyat invites you to an _expression of public support for the remarkable Supreme Court Judgement in the Best Bakery Case, transferring the case out of Gujarat to Maharashtra. The clear acknowledgement that the state government and judiciary of Gujarat cannot be trusted to conduct the trials of the victims of the violence in a fair and impartial manner is a major blow to the credibility of the whole political regime which has instigated communal violence over the past decade with horrific consequences for the nature of our society and state.

Please come and express your support publicly by taking the chance to say a few words about the judgement or its obvious political implications. With the country on the verge of elections, it is crucial for us to state those implications publicly and let the message be heard far and wide.

Teesta Setalvad (Secretary, Citizens for Justice and Peace) and Mihir Desai (Human rights lawyer), both centrally involved in this and other Gujarat cases, will introduce the event by presenting the Judgement and the background. This will be followed by general expressions of support from the audience as well as the signing of a statement drafted for the occasion.

We would very much like you to come and participate. Confirmed participants include: Vijay Tendulkar, Rahul Bose, Javed Akhtar, Mahesh Bhatt, Farouque Shaikh, and many others.

“When large numbers of people including innocent and helpless children and women are killed in a diabolic manner it brings disgrace to the entire society. Criminals have no religion. No religion teaches violence and cruelty-based religion is no religion at all, but a mere cloak to usurp power by fanning ill feeling and playing on feelings aroused thereby… The fanatics who spread violence in the name of religion are worse than terrorists and more dangerous than an alien enemy.”
