Danish toxic ship Frederik lands at Alang illegally
Frederik landed at Alang on th enight of 22nd April. Environment Ministry has given a keep a watch direction to the autorities. Today or tomorrow CPCB, GPCB and Customs would jointly inspeact the ship. The inspection would be videographed. Sources suggest that the ship has been cleaned of all possible hazardous waste which could catch attention. Only the part which is embedded in the ship would be of problem to them.
Earlier on 15 April, 2005, the Danish environmental minister, Connie Hedegaard, sent a fax letter to her counterpart, the Indian environment minister A. Raja, warning him that a toxic ship-for-scrap carrying carcinogenic asbestos insulation, is expected to arrive in India this week. The ferry ship Kong Frederik IX (now known as Frederik) left Denmark on March 16, 2005, and was headed to Alang in Bhavnagar, Gujarat for breaking. The fugitive ship was due to arrive in India by 20 April, 2005.
Initially it was reported that Indian environment ministry has not recieved the fax. Now it has been learnt that it has acknowledged it.
