Sub: Irresponsible and insensitive portrayal of the Pardhi Community.

Sir,

This is with reference to your latest news item: - “6 Pardhis acquitted after cops bungle robber case” (Mumbai Mirror Oct. 22). At the outset, I strongly condemn this irresponsible, insensitive reporting about the Pardhi community. In the past too, Mumbai Mirror has reported: - “The faces of two Phanse Pardhis who assaulted cops at Malad” (MM Sept. 1), “Now Pardhi Gang robs bungalow in Palghar” (MM Sept. 3). Even your parent newspaper, Times of India has reported, “Phase Pardhi robbers strike again” (TOI Aug 30), “Finally, a Phasse Pardhi robber is arrested” (TOI Sept. 2).

If these incidents had involved members of another community, would you have dared to report like this : “Muslim gang robs bungalow" or "Sikh Robbers strike again" or "6 Hindus acquitted after cops bungle robbery case"?. Doesn’t this sound ridiculous?

Do you realize the absurdity of your reporting on Pardhis? Such reporting will create a bias against the community, who are constantly victimized by the Police and villagers who never allow Pardhis to settle near them and lynch them on the slightest excuse. What if due to your irresponsible reports, an uninformed parent tells their child to distrust or distance oneself from Pardhis, or next time if there is a robbery in a locality, people automatically point a finger in the direction of the Pardhis locality, due to this “conditioning of the mind” and stereotype that your report creates.

Mumbai Mirror, Times of India and media groups indulging in such insensitive reporting owe an apology to this community. I hope better counsel prevails. Otherwise, in the event of such reports appearing again, I will be constrained to make a complaint to the Press Council of India as also file a criminal case.

Yours truly
